So here we have the NetDisk
Mega with all of its accessories. Klegg even included a CAT5e and
USB cable to get you started in external hard drive bliss. As this
is a high performance/capacity unit, it will require a separate
power supply, which of course accompanies the unit. While most
external hard drives have USB drivers on a CD for pre "Windows XP"
desktop machines, this CD contains the software necessary to set the
unit up on your network. We'll get more into that as we look at the
units NAS capabilities.

For starters, we're just
going to plug-in and start using the drive as a USB attached
external. As expected, the Windows XP based PC recognized the unit
and assigned it a drive letter.

Just to get some baseline
numbers, here is what HD Tach thought of the Netdisk Mega. An
average transfer rate of 33.7 Megabytes per second with a random
access seek time of 13.6 milliseconds. The burst transfer rate was
measured at 35.3 Megabytes per second.

Sisoftware's Sandra
Physical Disk benchmark shows the drive (indexed with red) compared
against four other devices. The Netdisk Mega was able to hover its
transfer rate around the 31Megabyte/second mark. These are all very
solid numbers for the USB interface, right on par with what I would
expect to see from a dedicated USB external hard drive.
