Seagate Momentus 7200.4 500GB SATA Notebook Hard Drive

This year has been inarguably the most exciting year for one of the least exciting components of the PC, the venerable hard disk drive. It's no secret that SSDs have started to shake things up in the storage market, showing huge performance potential.  However, as promising as the SSD is, there are still serious drawbacks with the new technology, providing an avenue for the rotational drive manufacturers to capitalize on.  The advantages of the rotational drive are primarily these two things: capacity and price.

And so, it just happens that the Club has a sample of Seagate's latest volley into the laptop hard drive market:  the Momentus 7200.4 500GB 2.5" drive.  The creation of a 500GB hard drive into a 2.5" form factor is an important one; it finally allows real mass storage to be used in today's mobile lifestyle.  Even more than that, such high capacity in such a small space enables many more uses than just laptop replacements; it's not hard to imagine such drives being used in enclosures, ultra-slim HTPCs, DVRs, and network appliances.  Even better yet, the enhanced spindle speeds of 7200RPMs should enable a better overall user experience.  So how does it perform?  Read on and find out!

While the Momentus 7200.4 looks like pretty much any other laptop hard drive, however, the excitement comes from within, with its high capacity, fast speeds, and 16MB cache.
