Antec Performance CPU Cooler Review

When most people hear Antec they think of Cases and rack enclosures, but Antec is more than just a one trick pony.  In addition to their line of award winning cases, Antec has also developed a line of performance accessories.  Today we look at the Performance CPU Cooler.  Is this the heatsink solution for you?  We fire one up right here at the Club!

The Performance CPU Cooler comes in the familiar blister pack.  The front simply describes the lightweight aluminum fin and copper heat pipe construction.  With this type of packaging the actual product is on display.

The back of the package gives a complete rundown on the compatibility of this unit and the specifications.  This heatsink is compatible with just about every socket type out there, except the Intel Socket 775.  So much for my Pentium D build!

Once out of the packaging the CPU Cooler has a simple, no frills look to it that is summed up by Antec's Performance CPU cooler philosophy:

"Affordable and Effective CPU Cooling - The Performance CPU Cooler continues the tradition set by Antec CPU coolers of offering affordable, yet effective cooling for today’s modern processors." -Antec

The aluminum frame surrounds a set of four copper heat pipes.  Each of the different mounting options attaches to the bottom of the unit via spring loaded screws.

The heatsink arrived with this Intel back plate attached.  By loosening the four spring loaded screws the plate can be removed for mounting.  Simply remove the white circular paper pieces and attach to your Intel motherboard from the back.  Trust me it's pretty easy, but we will show the AMD Socket 939 install here.

Lets take a closer look at the AMD plate.  The AMD install consists of the two pieces shown here.  The top half is the back plate and the bottom attached to the heat sink body.  These two pieces replace the plastic heatsink mount found on most Socket 939 installations.

Switching the mount over is as simple as removing the four screws found on the bottom of the unit.  The end result is shown here.  Only two spring loaded screws are needed to attach the Performance CPU Cooler to my ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe.

The accessories provided are shown here.  In addition to the two mounting brackets, Antec provides some heatsink goop and a set of simple instructions.  Removing the 3M paper is required to correctly mount the back plate to the motherboard!
