All roads lead to Vista? I don't agree...
Mike Ricciuti over at CNET has posted an interesting read about Microsoft's Vista operating system and why we will all be force to use it within the next year. Although I don't agree that "most" people will be switching over to Vista, I do agree that now Vista Service Pack 1 is out, we should be purchasing new computers with Vista preinstalled. However the majority of average users are afraid of change. Change is expensive and painful due to glitches and compatibility issues. The saying goes "if it's not broke, don't fix it" applies here. I'd say most people are generally happy with Windows XP and only the adventurous users who like to stay on the "bleeding edge" of technology, not the "cutting edge" of technology are the ones who are upgrading their current systems to Vista. Windows ME and Windows 2000 were much like the current release of Vista; full of problems. Yes, Vista will get better and it already has come a long way in the past year, but there is still no need to run out and buy a Vista upgrade. However, if you haven't upgraded yet it's time to start planning. If you do make the jump to Vista just be sure to purchase the upgrade or full version with SP1 included.

NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT Roundup @ [H]
NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT Roundup - The NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT arrived to thunderous praise for its performance below $200. We've got three differently clocked video cards based on the new GPU from ASUS, EVGA and KFA2 up for evaluation, and we'll see what they can do in Crysis, COD 4 and UT3.

Quote: "So when it comes to the GeForce 9600 GT, it has truly turned into a buyers' market. The pricing and feature set has spread out enough that the consumer can dictate everything you want with your video card, or everything you don't. If you find your cost inching back towards to the $200 price level, it is still hard for us to not suggest spending that hard earned cash on one of the many 8800GT that are available for Newegg and TigerDirect."

ClubOC Review: OCZ XTC Memory Cooler
Today we have a little treat from OCZ Technology. No it's not some kick ass memory. This time we are taking a look at their XTC Memory Cooler. Check it out right here at Club Overclocker as Joe takes an up close and personal look! Here's a quote:

Surprisingly, the heatspreader of the Ballistix reached up to 60C even when under a load for 15 minutes, which is more than I expected.  Not surprising, the XTC RAM cooler did an excellent job of cooling the RAM to reasonable levels, idling at 32.9C and loading at a mere 36.1C, with a delta of nearly 24C.  Even better, the XTC was barely audible when running.

ClubOC Review: Sapphire HD 3870 Toxic!
The video card war is still alive and well, but it appears that AMD/ATI have conceded the high-end market to nVidia and instead have focused their efforts on the mid-range market.  While some may see this as an omission of defeat, others will see it as a smart business move.  More consumers buy the mid-range cards versus the high-end ones.  Let’s face it, not all of us can afford a top of the line video card.  When it comes to the mid-range card, AMD/ATI has one of the best GPU’s, the 3870.  Sapphire has taken the 3870 up a notch by incorporating their custom Vapor-X cooler along with a very nice bundle.  Let’s see how well Sapphire’s 3870 Toxic card stacks up against a couple of mid-range cards from nVidia.

A lot of folks say that they've had no problems what-so-ever gaming with a wireless adapter. My personal feeling is that good old-fashioned copper still guarantees the fastest and most reliable connection. So unless you're house is already wired with Ethernet to every room, we have to find a way to get the Internet to every device that needs it. Fortunately, there is company out there that feels our pain. Better yet, they have decided to help do something about it. Corinex brings us, the GameNet. The short story is, it's Ethernet over Power line technology. The basics of the technology make it an alternative to using wireless protocols to network your home. When devices like this first started to make their debut, they used standard phone cords and proprietary network interface cards. With the GameNet, you'll use RJ-45 Ethernet cables and your devices own network interface adapter to string your device to the transceivers. Let's get this box open and see how this is going to work...

Ultra Power Partner 325 Watt Auxiliary Power Supply Review
Just recently Ultra Components and Technologies unveiled their new 325w auxiliary power supply called the "Power Partner". The Power Partner is similar to a redundant power supply, however the Power Partner does not supply power to the main board and does not mount in the computer case like a conventional power supply. Instead the Power Partner installs in a 5.25" drive bay just like an optical drive. The Power Partner is designed to be turned off and on by the main ATX power supply and powers devices like hard drives, PCI-E video cards, optical drives, and so on. Ultra has a great idea here and a simple solution to provide extra power for those who don't want to drop a ton of money on a high end gaming power supply to replace their inadequate OEM PSU. Let's take a closer look at the Power Partner to see if it's a wise choice for those in need of extra power or just another white elephant taking up space in your tower.

One reason I love being a ClubOC reviewer is the opportunity to try new and interesting gadgets.  A few weeks ago, Thermaltake sent me an HTPC case so that I got to dive into the world of PC-based Media Centers; today I get to jump into the world of Network Attached Storage with the new Muse X-Duo RAID enclosure.

If you are unfamiliar with the Network Attached Storage, a NAS box is essentially a group of external hard drives that plug directly into the network, offering a resource for data sharing and backups for the entire network, while remaining completely independent of every PC on the network.  As is plain to see, this offers some serious advantages for both the data-packrat home user and the small office.

So, let's take the wrapping off of the Muse X-Duo and see if it is worthy of storing my data....

I use to start off every power supply review by saying that the power supply is the most overlooked component of the computer.  I really don't think that's the case anymore.  Most enthusiasts that build computers are very aware of the importance of a good quality power supply.  What I'm seeing now is that people are buying into the marketing that you need a 1000watt or larger power supply to run your computer.  Maybe it's not marketing.  Maybe you really need a large power supply.  Sigma has sent over a 635 watt power supply.  Let's see if it has enough juice to run a decent rig.

OCZ Technology Group Enters Mass Production and Imminent Delivery of the Highly-Anticipated Neural Impulse Actuator
Sunnyvale, Calif.—March 3, 2008—OCZ Technology Group, a worldwide leader in innovative, ultra-high performance and high reliability memory and components for enthusiasts and gamers, is pleased to announced the Neural Impulse Actuator (NIA) has begun mass production and launch into channel is imminent. A prototype was debuted last year at CeBIT 2007 which generated a newfound excitement in the global gaming community.

Neural Impulse Actuator - The Future of Immersive Gaming
OCZ saw an exciting opportunity to enhance the gaming experience and take PC gameplay to new heights. The NIA is not a replacement for a mouse but rather a pioneering new peripheral designed to provide an immersive experience for gamers. The NIA is the first commercially available BCI (brain-computer interface) specifically for PC gamers.

“Advances in hardware and software allow today’s games to offer consumers an exceptional entertainment experience, and we wanted to take the next step by immersing gamers into these environments with the innovative new NIA,” stated Ryan Petersen, CEO of the OCZ Technology Group. “The NIA radically changes the ways that gamers can interact and control elements within games, and can be configured in a matter of minutes for any game that is already published or will be released.”

The commands are easily assigned with the NIA’s user-friendly software and are calibrated based on the individual’s physiology and personal preferences. Each of the Actuator’s signals can be assigned to a specific keystroke on the keyboard or a mouse button; consequentially, gamers can run, jump, and fire faster all without “lifting a finger.” Because the NIA converts EEG (electroencephalograph) signals into specified keystrokes, the device can be used with any software. Upon proper configuration, the NIA will allow users to control PC games without the use of a keyboard and minimal use of a mouse.

The final version of the NIA uses a sleek metal housing, a USB 2.0 interface, and streamlined headband with carbon “dry” interface sensors. Due to the anticipation surrounding the release of the NIA, OCZ will be demoing the mass production device and begin accepting orders at the CeBIT 2008 in Hannover, Germany.
